What are the effects of not following a healthy balanced diet?
A person may become underweight ,overweight or obese
There is greater risk of cardiovascular problems e.g stroke or heart attack
A person may have a weaker immune system and a greater chance of getting ill
Not getting all of the right nutrients could lead to deficiency diseases e.g low iron leads to anaemia and a lack of vitamin c can cause scurvy
Recommendments
Children and adolescents (5 to 18) should do moderate to vigorous intensity activity for at least 60 minutes a day.
Adults should do 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity (e.g brisk walking) or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week e.g running every week
People should avoid the amount of time they spend being sedentary
What are the benefits of physical activity?
reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems e.g stroke or heart attack
strengthens muscles and bones and prevents joint problems e.g arthritis
Helps a person reach healthy weight and reduces the risk of obesity
Reduces the risk of developing health problems e.g type 2 diabetes
Smoking
Lead to respiratory problems e.g chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
can cause cancer-over 70% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking
increase risk of cardiovascular problems e.g stroke and heart attack
increased risk of complications during pregnancy e.g premature birth
worsen the symptoms of conditions such as asthma
reduce fertility in both men and women
Alcohol recommendations
adults shouldn’t regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week
if an adult regularly drinks more than 14 units of alcohol a week, they should spread it evenly over 3 or more days
women don’t drink any alcohol when they’re pregnant
drinking can lead to:
high blood pressure, strokes,liver damage, reduced fertility,a weaker immune system, weight gain, cancer (e.g breast cancer),insomnia
Substance misuse
Substance misuse includes:using illegal drugs (e.g cannabis or cocaine),using legal drugs (e.g alcohol) dangerously, using prescription drugs incorrectly
Health risks can include:Coronary heart disease and heart attacks.complications during pregnancy, reduced fertility, kidney and liver damage, respiratory problems
