what is Tort Law?
Tort law is meant to compensate (pay) those who have suffered injuries as a result of wrongful conduct of others…specifically Tort law will compensate those who suffer:
a loss (damages); or
2. injury (or death); due to
3. another’s wrongful (possibly criminal) act
What is the purpose of Tort law?
Provide remedies for protected interests
Protected interests include Freedom from:
1. Personal injury (or wrongful death);
2. Interference with physical security and freedom of movement
Tort law provides legal remedies for:
1. personal injury/wrongful death;
2. property damage;
3. harm to reputation;
4. invasion of privacy;
5. False imprisonment
What are the types of damages (money compensation paid to injured person) available in Tort law?
compensatory (Special and General)
Punitive ( available if intentional tort or negligence)
