Source
The starting point or beginning of a river.
Mouth
The point where a river ends its journey, flowing into the sea, an ocean, or a lake.
Tributaries
Smaller streams or rivers that flow into and join a larger main river.
Upper course
The first stage of a river, characterized by features like waterfalls, gorges, V-shaped valleys, and interlocking spurs.
Middle course
The second stage of a river where the land is flatter and meanders begin to form.
Lower course
The final stage of a river as it approaches the sea, often characterized by flat land and deposition.
Erosion
The geological process in which earth materials are worn away and transported by natural forces like water.
Transport
The movement of eroded material downstream by the flow of the river.
Deposition
The process where a river loses energy and drops the material it was carrying.
Waterfall
A river feature where water falls over a vertical drop in the upper course.
Gorge
A narrow valley with steep, rocky walls, often formed as a waterfall retreats.
V-shaped valley
A narrow valley with steep sides formed by vertical erosion in the upper course of a river.
Interlocking spurs
A series of ridges that project out on alternate sides of a V-shaped valley which the river winds around.
Meander
A winding curve or bend in a river's channel.
Oxbow lake
A U-shaped body of water that forms when a wide meander is cut off from the main river.
Flooding
An event that occurs when a river's discharge exceeds its channel capacity and overflows its banks.
Hard engineering
Human-made, structural river management strategies used to control flooding.
Soft engineering
River management strategies that work with natural processes to reduce flood risk.
Water cycle
The process by which water moves between the atmosphere, land, and oceans.
Describe
A command word meaning to say what something is like.
Explain
A command word meaning to give reasons why.
