What are the 4 types of culture media? (SEND)
Selective
Enrichment
Nutritive
Differential
Describe Selective Media…
A media that contains additives such as dyes, bile salts, alcohols, acids, or antibiotics to inhibit growth of certain bacteria
Describe Enrichment Media
A media that contains added growth factors
Why do we call it “Nutritive media”?
Because it supports the growth of MOST nonfastidious bacteria
Nonfastidious vs. Fastidious bacteria
N: Does not require special conditions for growth
F: Requires special nutritional supplements or conditions for growth
Describe Differential Media
A media that contains compounds that allow certain bacteria (or even species) to be visually differentiated
What are some methods of Differential Media?
Lactose fermentation and Hydrogen sulfide production (H2S)
