All O2 sections in order
Therapeutic Effects, Indications, Contraindications, Side Effects, Oxygen Safety Precautions, The student will demonstrate the use of equipment/procedure, Three oxygen delivery methods (Abbreviations → TICS and OTT)
Therapeutic Effects
To diminish respiratory distress and hypoxia
Indications
To meet the increased oxygen demand for any injured or ill patients
Any situation or condition in which hypoxia or hypoxemia is suspected
Contraindications
None, if the patient is showing signs of hypoxia
Oxygen Safety Precautions
Cylinders must be secured to prevent tipping, falling, or rolling. (Student will always keep one hand on an upright cylinder, OR student will keep cylinder in bag with nozzle facing out)
Do not seal or cover valve stem with tpe or petroleum-based substances as it can contaminate the O2.
Keep all valves closed when not in use, even when the tank is empty.
Do not allow smoking in the vicinity when oxygen is in use.
Do not use regulators with missing or modified pins or if missing O-ring.
Cylinder sizes: D/350L (airway bag or stretcher), E/625L (hospital beds), M/3000L (rescue truck)
The student will demonstrate the use of the equipment/ procedure.
Student will work directly from equipment
Take and verbalize standard precautions.
Inspect oxygen regulator (pins, O-ring) and bottle (verbalize most recent hydro-date, inspect for any damage)
quickly open (away from eyes), then shut the cylinder valve to remove any dust or debris.
Properly attach the regulator to the tank, open valve, and check regulator for leaks.
Full 2000 psi (pounds per square inch) (student will verbalize tank pressure)
Three Oxygen Delivery Methods (student will turn regulator off between each device)
NASAL CANNULA: Set proper flow rate (1-6 lpm), delivers 24-44% O2. Properly attach NC.
NON-REBREATHER: Set proper flow rate (10-15 lpm), fill reservoir bag, delivers up to 90% O2. Properly attach NRB.
BAG-VALVE-MASK: Set proper flow rate (15-25 lpm), delivers 97-100% O2. Properly attach BVM.
Properly disassemble regulator from O2 bottle and secure bottle in airway bag with straps. (Verbalize ONLY ON TEST DAY)
