Mecca (Makkah)

– A city in modern day Saudi Arabia. The holiest place on earth to Muslims and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad.

Shahada

– ‘The confession of faith’. To say that ‘Allah is the only God and that Muhammad is his true Prophet.’ Said by all Muslims. It is a pillar of Islam

Salah

– Daily prayer. There are five prayer times during each day that Muslims should observe. Another pillar of Islam.

Sawm –

Fasting. Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. It is a pillar of Islam

Zakah –

Charity. Muslims should be charitable in actions and attitudes. It is a pillar of Islam.

Hajj –

Holy pilgrimage at Mecca. It is a pillar of Islam

Qur’an –

The sacred text of Islam. It contains the word of God (Allah), revealed to Muhammad throughout his life.

Ramadan –

A month in the Muslim calendar during which fasting takes place.

Ummah –

The Muslim community, this can be local and worldwide.

Hadith –

A holy book of Islam containing the teachings and story of the Prophet Muhammad. It is second only to the Qur’an.
