Oppression of women; more blatant in The Handmaid's Tale however in Frankenstein women are silenced and also objectified (Elizabeth); connect to feminist theory

Class divide

Upper vs lower class; In Frankenstein him and his family hold power over people like Justine and Elizabeth while in Handmaid's people are split (econowives vs wives, handmaid's lower class than wives); could connect to marxist theory

The Other

Both Frankenstein's monster and the handmaids are othered

Nature

Treatment of nature; Frankenstein nature is treated with the sublime, Handmaid's nature has been destroyed but it is still used as a solace (garden)

Multiple POV

In Handmaid's there is mostly one POV but then the historical notes, in Frankenstein there is Walton, Frankenstein, Monster which creates more doubt on Frankenstein's persepective

Manipulation of science

Used by Frankenstein in making the monster, used by the state of Gilead (the doctor)

Subversion of religion

Used by the state of Gilead to justify their regime, Frankenstein usurps God in his creation
