Mammography
A medical imaging technique that uses low-energy x-rays to examine breast tissue.
Lesions under 2.0 mm
Small abnormal tissue growths that mammography can detect.
Noninvasive
A procedure that does not require insertion of instruments into the body.
Factors Affecting Image Quality
Includes inherent quality of the mammography unit, processing conditions, compression, and patient positioning.
Breast Compression
Process of compressing the breast to allow uniform density, reduce radiation dose, and enhance visualization of lesions.
Mediolateral Projection (MLO)
An imaging technique that visualizes upper-outer quadrant and extreme posterior breast.
Maximum Medial Tissue Inclusion
Pulling lateral tissue onto the detector to ensure medial breast tissue is not sacrificed.
Supplementary Projections
Additional imaging views necessary when standard projections are inadequate.
Posterior Nipple Line (PNL)
A line from the nipple to the posterior edge of the image, important for proper positioning in mammography.
Exaggerated Craniocaudal Lateral (XCCL)
A projection used to visualize lateral aspects of the breast not seen in a standard CC projection.
Compression Paddle
A device used in mammography to compress the breast during imaging.
Magnification Imaging
A technique used to analyze calcifications and evaluate margins of lesions by enlarging the area of interest.
Point of Care
An approach where patient care happens at the time and place of patient visits, including quick imaging evaluations.
Silicone implants
A type of breast implant filled with silicone gel used for augmentation.
Tissue Expansion
A surgical method to stretch skin to accommodate breast implants.
