What is a mood?
Emotional state that has some relative persistence over time.
What is depression?
A sense of hopelessness, helpless, worthless, guilt, anhedonia, neurodegenerative features.
What is melancholia?
A lack of reactivity to pleasurable stimuli (anhedonia), profound guilt, bad depression in the morning.
What are symptoms commonly associated with mood disorders?
Anxiety, psychosis and catatonia
What is distal stress?
it is a stressor that occurred a long time ago in the patient’s life.
What are the types of mood disorders?
Major depressive disorder, Bipolar disorder, Adjustment disorder with depressed mood
What are the diagnostic criteria that are required to diagnose major depressive disorder?
At least a depressed/ irritable mood or loss of interest or pleasure must be present in 5-9 other symptoms.
Loss of energy, changes in sleep, changes in weight/ appetite, psychomotor retardation/agitation, impaired concentration, thoughts of worthlessness or guilt, thoughts of suicide or death.
How long do symptoms have to be present for major depressive disorder?
at least for two weeks, and cuasing significant distress or impairment, if they are not attributable to any other substance or medication.
what is electroconvulsive therapy?
Brief current of electricity is passed through the brain to simulate a seizure, it useful for people who are depressed and suicidal, psychotic depression, depressed patients who have stopped eating and drinking, treatment resistant.
What is an elevated mood?
Mania or hypo mania, can make people expansive, Euphoric or irritable. May seem very excited and manic (duh)
how may someone with an elevated mood present?
Talkative, inflated self esteem, decreased need for sleep, more talkative, flight of ideas, distractability, increased goal directed activity, excessive involvement in activities that are high risk for painful consequences.
