what is a negative control?
not to expect any reaction/ dependent variable
nitrogen fixation
Nitrogen gas is fixed into ammonia (NH3), later ionized to ammonium (NH4+) by getting hydrogen ions from the soil solution
nitrification
2-step process
NH3/NH4+ is converted to Nitrate (NO3)
assimilation
where plants and animals take up Nitrate(NO3) and ammonium (NH4) to incorporate them into organic molecules (proteins, amino acids, nucleic acids)
ammonification
when both plants and animals decompose (died), releasing ammonium (NO3) into the soil
denitrification
when nitrate (NO3) is converted back into nitrogen gas (N2) back into the atmosphere
