What is matter?
Anything that has mass (weight) and occupies space.
Particles of matter
Matter is made up of tiny particles (atoms & molecules).
Solid
A state of matter with a fixed shape and fixed volume; particles are tightly packed.
Liquid
A state of matter with no fixed shape (takes shape of container) and fixed volume; particles are less tightly packed.
Gas
A state of matter with no fixed shape and no fixed volume; particles are very far apart.
Change of state of matter by temperature
Matter can change its state through processes like melting, evaporation, freezing, and condensation.
What is evaporation?
Change of liquid into gas at any temperature.
Factors affecting evaporation
Temperature, wind speed, surface area, and humidity influence the rate of evaporation.
Cooling by evaporation
Evaporation causes cooling, as seen in sweating and water in an earthen pot.
Sublimation
A process where a solid changes directly into a gas without going through a liquid state.
Condensation
A process where a gas changes into a liquid.
Deposition
A process where a gas changes directly into a solid.
