Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Matter is made up of particles called atoms.
Atom
An atom is the smallest complete particle of matter.
Elements
An element is a substance made up of one type of atom. E.g. Oxygen is made up of only oxygen atoms; Gold is made up of only gold atoms.
Compounds
Pure substances made of more than one type of element chemically bonded together (e.g. water (H2O) is made of hydrogen and oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO2) is made up of carbon and oxygen).
Molecules
Two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together, which may also be compounds. E.g., oxygen (O2) is made up of oxygen atoms; Nitrogen (N2) is made up of Nitrogen atoms.
Molecules of Elements
The bonded atoms are the same type. E.g. Hydrogen (H2) Two hydrogen atoms joined.(Chemically Bonded)
Molecules of Compounds
The bonded atoms are different types. E.g. Carbon dioxide (CO2) Carbon and oxygen atoms joined together. (Chemically Bonded)
Elements (Pure) (Examples)
Hydrogen, Oxygen, Helium, Gold, Copper
Compounds (Pure) (Examples)
Salt, Pure water, Carbon dioxide, Sugar
Mixtures (impure) (Examples)
Milk, Sea water, Air, Lemonade
