Mitotic division in animals

Division that is only seen in diploid somatic cells.

Mitotic division in plants

Division seen in both haploid and diploid cells.

$G_1$ phase decision

The stage in the cell cycle where the decision of a cell to divide occurs.

$G_0$ phase

Also called the Quiescent phase; a stage a cell enters if it does not want to divide, from which it can later re-enter $G_1$ phase when conditions change.

Restriction point

The major check point occurring at the $G_1 \rightarrow S$ transition; once crossed, the cell is destined to complete the cell cycle.

Minor check point

The check point occurring during the $G_2 \rightarrow M$ transition.

Quiescent phase

An alternative name for the $G_0$ phase where cells remain when they are not dividing.
