Mitotic division in animals
Division that is only seen in diploid somatic cells.
Mitotic division in plants
Division seen in both haploid and diploid cells.
G1 phase decision
The stage in the cell cycle where the decision of a cell to divide occurs.
G0 phase
Also called the Quiescent phase; a stage a cell enters if it does not want to divide, from which it can later re-enter G1 phase when conditions change.
Restriction point
The major check point occurring at the G1→S transition; once crossed, the cell is destined to complete the cell cycle.
Minor check point
The check point occurring during the G2→M transition.
Quiescent phase
An alternative name for the G0 phase where cells remain when they are not dividing.
