Château des six femmes
Built across the Cher river
Cher river was the boundary between northern, occupied France and southern, unoccupied zone in WWII. This castle helped smuggle people out of the occupied zone!
Wonderful son et lumière show in summer evenings!
Chenonceau
This castle was the model for the castle in La Belle au bois dormant – Sleeping Beauty.
Several rooms display various scenes from the story.
Beautiful terraces facing the Indre river – build in the beginning of the Renaissance.
Le Château d’Ussé
Famous for it’s 16th century Renaissance gardens.
Half was built before the Renaissance – the heavily fortified tower – and the other half was built more for beauty!
Villandry
Medieval fortress located on the Indrois river.
The village at the foot of the castle is known for it’s medieval furniture.
Montrésor
Known for it’s staircase – which is straight rather than spiral.
Built partly in the Indrois River.

Azay-le-Rideau
Preferred residence of Louis XI, Charles VIII, et François I!
In 1560 there was a massacre of French protestants here and afterward it was abandoned by the monarchy.
Huge spiral ramp that horses could come up to meet the king!
Amboise
Beautiful manor near Amboise.
François I convinced Léonard de Vinci to live and work here.
