Physical Examination (PE)
Observation of each body system to determine abnormal problems that can cause a health issue.
Triage
A quick, general assessment of a patient to determine the urgency of their need for veterinary attention.
Stethoscope
A tool used to examine and listen to the heart, chest, and lungs.
Capillary Refill Time (CRT)
A test to measure how quickly blood returns to capillaries after pressure is applied; normal CRT is 1-2 seconds.
Body Condition Score (BCS)
A system used to assess an animal's body fat and overall health.
Ophthalmoscope
Instrument used to examine the eyes.
Auscultation
The process of listening to internal sounds of the body, often using a stethoscope.
Aural Medications
Medications placed inside the ear canal for treatments such as ear infections.
Vital Signs
Measurements to assess the basic functions of the body, including temperature, pulse, heart rate, and respiration.
Hypothermia
A condition where body temperature is below normal.
Hyperthermia
A condition where body temperature is above normal, often indicating fever.
Arrhythmia
An irregular heartbeat pattern.
Subcutaneous Injection (SQ)
An injection administered under the skin for vaccines or medications.
Gait
The manner or pattern of walking, which can indicate health issues.
Neonate
A newborn animal, particularly a puppy or kitten.
Decubital Sores
Bedsores that occur due to continuous pressure on the skin.
Tachypnea
Excessively rapid breathing.
Mucous Membrane (mm)
The moist tissue lining certain body cavities; color indicates health status.
Nail Trimming
The process of cutting an animal’s nails to prevent overgrowth.
Vaccination
The administration of a vaccine to promote immunity against a disease.
