Parts of Speech

Adjectives

Words that tell us more about a person, place, or thing by modifying nouns or pronouns (e.g., big, red, happy).

Adverbs

Words that tell us more about actions, adjectives, or other adverbs, often answering how, when, where, or to what extent (e.g., quickly, very, well).

Conjunctions

Words that join words, phrases, clauses, or entire sentences together (e.g., and, but, because).

Determiners

Words that come before nouns to clarify which specific one or how many are being referred to (e.g., a, the, some).

Interjections

Words or short phrases used to express sudden feelings, emotions, or surprise (e.g., wow!, ouch!, hey!).

Nouns

Words that name people, places, things, or abstract ideas (e.g., dog, school, love).

Prepositions

Words that show position, time, location, or direction by linking nouns or pronouns to other words (e.g., in, on, under).

Pronouns
