Alexander Hamilton
The Treasury Secretary and member of the Federalist party who created the national bank to stabilize American currency.
Alien and Sedition Acts
Laws passed during the presidency of John Adams that targeted individuals and violated First Amendment rights to freedom of speech.
Manifest Destiny
A concept used to justify westward expansion across the continent.
Dred Scott
A Supreme Court case that ruled enslaved people were not citizens.
Republican Party
The political party Lincoln belonged to, which initially advocated for the containment of slavery.
Emancipation Proclamation
A document issued by Lincoln freeing people enslaved in Confederate states in rebellion.
Gilded
A term describing something that is golden on the outside but rotten on the inside.
Monopoly
A business state where consumer competition is reduced and prices go up.

Journalists like Upton Sinclair who exposed unsafe and unsanitary conditions in industries.
