Writing that is full of imagery, description, and emotion
Prose
Writing that uses everyday language, sentence after sentence,
Refrain
A phrase or verse that repeats in a song or poem, especially at the end of each stanza.
Stanza
An arrangement of certain number of lines, usually four or more, forming a division in a poem
Rhythm
Beat or syllables of a poem. Usually determine by the syllable of words.
Mood
The feeling the reader has when reading the imagery of a poem.
Tone
The feeling the writer has towards the subject/topic of their writing.
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things in which a comparison word (Like or as) is used.
Example: the man was as Hungary as a bear at dinner time.
Metaphor
Comparison that show how two things are not alike. Unlike similes that user the words “As” or “Like” to make a comparison
Example: Cindy was such a mule. WE couldn’t get her to change her mind.
Personification
A figure of speech in which a lifeless object or being is given human qualities or abilities
Examples: The sun danced across the sky on a hot summer day
Hyperbole
A much-exaggerated statement for a dramatic effect
Example: I was so tired of walking, my feet were killing me
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to.
Example:The old floor creaked as we walked slowly down the hall.
Idiom
A phrase that actually mean something different from its literal meaning
Example” Last night was raining cats and dogs.
