1906 Earthquake

In San Francisco. Result in the burning of City Hall that holds birth certificate documents. Because of Chinese Exclusion Act, Chinese would be stopped from entering due to not being US citizens. With the burning, Chinese begin to manufacture fake birth certificates to get back and forth

Angel Island (1910-1940)

Processing center created in response to Paper Sons and document fiasco. Basically a holding center to try and prove that their documents are fake, etc. to stop them from coming in

  1. Cannot practice return migration that same (due to Chinese Exclusion Act). Stay in US longer

  2. Location- Move further East towards NYC, Philidelphia, etc. (diff from other groups who usually head WEST)

  3. Work- be able to move into more traditional jobs that other immigrants hold

  4. Family + Women- send unmarried men to have families in America, also send much more women
