What are we made up of?
fat mass (essential and nonessential), fat-free mass (muscle, bone…), essential fat (incorporated in tissues of the body), nonessential fat (stored in fat cells under skin)
what is bmi
a measure of relative body weight correlating highly with more direct measures of body fat. it’s calculated by dividing total body weight by square of body weight. it doesn’t distinguish between fat weight and lean weight, so it may present unrealistic standards for those of short stature.
what range of values of bmi is considered healthy
18.5-24.9

strategies for weight management
small changes over time lead to significant change vs extreme changes that aren’t sustainable or realistic. there are no quick fixes and you can’t be short-sighted
eating/nutrition
you have to eat less calories than you burn, control your portions, avoid calorie-dense foods, be careful about skipping meals and then overeating, and eat enough protein.
