Mechanism of injury (MOI)
How a traumatic injury occurred. Helps predict possible internal injuries.
Medical
Type of emergency involving illness or disease rather than physical injury.
Nature of the illness (NOI)
General type of medical problem or illness affecting the patient.
Scene safety
Ensuring the environment is safe for EMS, patients, and bystanders before patient contact.
Scene size-up
Initial assessment of the scene to identify hazards, determine MOI/NOI, number of patients, and needed resources.
Trauma
Physical injury caused by external force such as falls, crashes, or violence.
