Theory of Planned Behaviour
A behaviour change model that analyses individuals’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control to bridge the gap between intention and actual behaviour.
Subjective Norms
One of the 3 factors in the theory of planned behaviour referring to an individual's perceptions of social or normative expectations regarding exercise.
Perceived Behavioural Control
A component of the theory of planned behaviour that accounts for external factors and practical constraints such as having time, money, or skills.
Social Ecological Model
An all-encompassing framework that seeks to understand behaviours at the individual, social, environmental, and policy levels to make systemic changes.
Individual Agency
A factor neglected by the Social ecological model, which instead focuses on environmental and policy issues rather than an individual's unique experiences and attitudes.
Intrinsic Motivation
A type of motivation that research shows is increased by allowing people autonomy and choices about how they want to exercise.
Cognitive Techniques
Methods used to reframe how participants feel by using distractions like music or television to turn attention away from symptoms of strain and fatigue.
Initial Interview
An assessment aimed at uncovering fears associated with physical activity to prevent the reinforcement or exacerbation of those fears, especially in high-risk individuals.
Exercise Addiction
A psychological condition and potential co-symptom of eating disorders involving overdoing physical activity to the point of injury or neglect of responsibilities.
Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire
A specific measurement tool used to provide an overview of body image concerns during a comprehensive body image audit.
Self-discovery
The first step of the 8-step self-directed programme for body image, which may involve using a body image audit.
Autonomy-supportive Environment
A setting created by an instructor using strategies like diverse tasks, intentional grouping for cooperative learning, and providing participants with leadership roles.
