Density
The measurement of mass per unit volume.
Density equation
D=M/V, where D is density, M is mass, and V is volume.
Mass
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Volume
How much space an object takes up.
Density of water
1 g/mL; objects with density greater than 1 g/mL sink, objects with density less than 1 g/mL float.
Example of Density
A golf ball is more dense than a tennis ball because its molecules are more compact; it sinks while the tennis ball floats.
Density triangle
A visual aid that represents the relationship between mass, volume, and density with density at the top, mass on one side, and volume on the other.
Significant figures in density problems
The final answer should reflect the correct amount of significant figures.
Unit of Density
Common units are g/mL for liquids and g/cm³ for solids.
Density problem solving tips
Include units of measurement, draw the density triangle for reference, and memorize the density of water.
