Density
Density is the measurement if the mass per unit volume.
Density equation: D=M/V
Mass is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Volume is how much space an objects takes up.
Density of Water: Will it Sink or Float?
The density of water is 1 g/mL.
If an object has a density GREATER than 1, it will SINK in water.
If an object has a density LESS THAN than 1, it will FLOAT in water.
Example:
Even though it is smaller a golf ball is more dense than a tennis ball because the molecules are more compact.
A golf ball will sink while a tennis ball will float.
Density Triangle
The density triangle can be used to visualize the relationship between mass, volume, and density, where the density (D) is represented at the top, mass (M) on one side, and volume (V) on the other side.
When solving a word problem, cover the variable you’re looking for and use the triangle to rearrange the formula accordingly. This approach simplifies finding the missing value, whether it be mass, volume, or density.

Tips for solving density problems on test
Final answer should have correct amount of significant figures.
Include the units of measurements (g, mL, g/mL, cm, g/cm³).
Draw the density triangle on your test to reference.
Memorize the density of water.
