What is the periodontium?
Supports the tooth in its relation to the alveolar process

What does the periodontium include?
Cementum, alveolar process, periodontal ligament (PDL)

What is the outermost layer of the root(s) composed of?
Cementum

Where is cementum the thickest?
At the tooth’s apex/apices

Where is cementum the thinnest?
The cement enamel junction (CEJ) at the cervix of the tooth
What are the properties of cementum?
65% Inorganic, 23% Organic, 12% Water

How does cementum appear radiographically?
Appears more radiolucent than either enamel or dentin but more radiopaque than pulp tissue

TRUE OR FALSE: cementum is avascular (no nerves)
TRUE
How does cementum receive nutrition?
Through its own embedded cells from the surrounding vascular PDL

How does cementum develop?
Develops from the dental sac, forms on the root dentin after the disintegration of Hertwig epithelial root sheath (HERS)
What triggers cementum development?
Hertwig’s Epithelial Root Sheath (HERS) breaks down and exposing root dentin to dental follicle cells
What do cementoblasts do?
Differentiate from follicle cells; lay down organic matrix
What do cementocytes do?
Cementoblasts trapped within their own matrix
What do cementoblasts lay down?
Cementoid
TRUE OR FALSE: Many of the cementoblasts become entrapped by the cementum they produce, becoming cementocytes regulating formation and resorption
TRUE
What is cementum composed of?
Mineralized fibrous matrix and cells
