Pigment
A substance that provides color to paint, usually in the form of fine powder.
Binder
A material that holds pigment particles together in paint, such as linseed oil in oil paint or egg yolk in tempera paint.
Vehicle
The liquid component of paint that allows it to be applied; for example, water in watercolors or turpentine in oil paints.
Support
The underlying structure or surface that holds the painting, which must be sealed and primed for painting.
Watercolor
A water-based paint consisting of pigments mixed with water and gum arabic, commonly applied on white rag paper.
Fresco
A technique of mural painting where pigments are applied on freshly laid damp lime plaster.
Encaustic
A painting method using pigments suspended in hot beeswax, known for its lustrous surfaces and ancient origins.
Tempera
A medium of paint known for using egg yolk as a binder, resulting in a matte and durable surface.
Oil Paint
A favorite medium in Western art that uses linseed oil as a binder, prized for its versatility and depth of color.
Acrylic Paint
A synthetic paint introduced in the mid-20th century, made of acrylic polymer emulsion and water, known for its quick drying time and permanence.
Impasto
A technique in oil painting involving thick layers of paint that stand out from the surface.
Cartoon (in painting)
A preliminary drawing or design used in fresco painting to aid in applying pigment accurately.
Lustrous Surfaces
The shiny and reflective quality of certain paint media such as encaustic.
