Leisure
Defined as a quality of experience or as free time use for enjoyment.
Free time
Time spent away from business, work, job hunting, domestic chores, and education, as well as necessary activities such as eating and sleeping.
Recreation
The pursuit of leisure activities during one’s spare time; activities or experiences carried on within leisure, usually chosen voluntarily for satisfaction, pleasure, or creative enrichment.
Outdoor recreation
Activities that take place in a natural setting, as opposed to a highly cultivated or managed landscape such as a playing field or golf course.
Adventure tourism
According to the UNWTO, a trip that includes at least two of three elements: physical activity, natural environment, and cultural immersion.
Nature-based tourism
Tourism experiences that are directly or indirectly dependent on the natural environment, such as whale watching, birding, or kayaking.
Active Recreation
An activity that requires a considerable expenditure of energy and use of special facilities, courses, fields, or equipment (e.g., cycling).
Passive Recreation
Activities involving little exertion that are generally sustained and do not require prepared facilities like sports fields (e.g., reading and fishing).
Physical Activities
A type of recreation including sports, games, and fitness.
Social Activities
A type of recreation including parties, banquets, and picnics.
Service Activities
A type of recreation centered on the fun found in doing things for others.
Discretionary Time
Time made available by more holidays, longer vacations, social security benefits, and labor-saving devices like automatic washing machines.
Commodification of Leisure
The trend where new facilities offering varied forms of recreation, such as huge public fitness centers, are developed as commercial products.
Therapeutic Recreation Service
Recreational programs specifically designed for the mentally retarded, mentally ill, and physically-challenged.
Physical Health Benefit
Effects including reduced obesity, diminished risk of chronic diseases, boosted immune system, and increased life expectancy.
Lodging
A place where a person stays temporarily, usually overnight, while traveling or away from home.
Hotel (DOT Definition)
A building edifice or premises used for the regular reception, accommodation, or lodging of travelers and tourists and the provision of incidental services for a fee.
Motels
Roadside accommodations designed mainly for motorists, usually featuring parking beside rooms.
Inns
Small lodging establishments, often in rural or historic areas, offering more personal service and limited rooms.
Bed and Breakfast (B&B)
Small lodging, often a family home, that includes an overnight stay and breakfast.
Homestays
A lodging type where guests stay inside a local family’s home for a cultural experience.
Serviced Apartments
Fully furnished apartments with hotel-like services, kitchens, and living areas, suitable for long stays.
Commercial Hotels
The largest group of hotels that primarily caters to business travelers and offers state-of-the-art facilities.
Airport Hotels
Hotels located near major travel centers catering to business travelers, passengers with layovers, and airline personnel.
Resorts (DOT Definition)
Any place with a pleasant environment conducive to comfort and rest, offering food, sleeping accommodation, and recreational facilities for a fee.
Suite Hotels
Luxury hotels featuring rooms that may include a foyer, kitchen, and butler service.
Extended Stay Hotels
Hotels designed for travelers intending to stay five days or longer, offering reduced services and kitchen areas.
Casino Hotels
Hotels that highlight gaming as a primary entertainment venue for guests.
1-Star Hotel
Provides basic accommodations with minimal amenities, clean rooms, and essential furniture.
5-Star Hotel
Luxury hotels providing exceptional service, elegant accommodations, fine dining, concierge, and spa facilities.
Hotel Management Contract
An agreement where an operator/management company assumes responsibility for managing a property on behalf of an owner for a fee.
AAA Resort
The highest resort classification in the Philippines, meeting international standards with excellent facilities and guest services.

Resorts providing basic accommodations and limited facilities that meet minimum operational standards.

The law that allows for the setting up of a system of accreditation, standards-setting, and classification to make the Philippine tourism industry globally competitive.
TIEZA
Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority; a corporate body that regulates Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZs) and manages infrastructure projects.
TPB
Tourism Promotions Board; formulated to implement integrated domestic and international marketing programs.
Primary Tourism Enterprises
Facilities and services directly related to tourism (e.g., hotels, resorts, travel agencies) that are required to obtain mandatory DOT accreditation.
Secondary Tourism Enterprises
Facilities and services that may be related to tourism (e.g., restaurants, museums, spas) where DOT accreditation is voluntary.
Mabuhay Accommodation
A category of primary tourism enterprises including tourist inns, motels, pension houses, and bed and breakfasts.
