Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE)
Measures CO₂ exchange ONLY between ecosystem and atmosphere.
(NEE = Respiration - GPP)
Negative NEE = ecosystem is a carbon sink. Source is opposite
Net Ecosystem Carbon Balance (NECB)
All carbon fluxes, not just CO₂.
Includes:
CH₄ emissions
Dissolved organic carbon export
Fire
Lateral flows (erosion), DIC, DOC, Particulate Organic Carbon, animal movements, harvest, removes reduced C compounds that moves it from ecosystem to ecosystem, larger where there is large migration is.
Input of carbon from terrestrial sources into streams and export of C through stream system
NECB is the full carbon budget
NEE is only the vertical CO₂ component.
Forest
Big CO₂ fluxes (both uptake and respiration)
Large GPP
Large carbon storage in wood
Episodic, high‑severity fire losses
Higher DOC export
Very low CH4
Grassland
Smaller CO₂ fluxes
Low GPP
Most carbon stored belowground
Frequent, low‑severity fires
Lower DOC export
Very low CH₄
