Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE)

  • Measures CO₂ exchange ONLY between ecosystem and atmosphere.

  • (NEE = Respiration - GPP)

  • Negative NEE = ecosystem is a carbon sink. Source is opposite

Net Ecosystem Carbon Balance (NECB)

  • All carbon fluxes, not just CO₂.

  • Includes:

    • CH₄ emissions

    • Dissolved organic carbon export

    • Fire

    • Lateral flows (erosion), DIC, DOC, Particulate Organic Carbon, animal movements, harvest, removes reduced C compounds that moves it from ecosystem to ecosystem, larger where there is large migration is.

    • Input of carbon from terrestrial sources into streams and export of C through stream system
