Globalization
The process by which religions spread beyond national borders, allowing new religious movements to engage in overseas activities.
Religion
A system of socially shared symbols, beliefs, and rituals directed towards a sacred, supernatural realm addressing ultimate existence meanings.
Ecclesia
A large formally organized religious body that includes most members of society, closely allied with secular and state powers.
Denomination
An established, socially accepted religious organization that maintains tolerant relations with other denominations in a pluralistic context.
Sect
A small, less formally organized group that usually separates from a denomination and is in negative tension with the larger society.
Cult
A loosely organized transcendent religious organization with beliefs and practices considered novel or odd compared to a society's mainstream religion.
Animatism
A belief system where supernatural forces, rather than gods or spirits, are viewed as the dominant power in the universe.
Animism
The belief that spirit beings inhabit the same world as humans, but exist on another plane.
Polytheism

Monotheism
The belief in a single god, as seen in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
Secularization
The thesis that modernization leads to the decline of small-scale societies based on traditional and religious worldviews.
Social Solidarity
The way in which religion can promote unity through common symbols, beliefs, norms, and collective rituals.
Religious Pluralism
A context where various religious groups coexist with tolerance and acceptance of each other's beliefs.
Gnosticism
An ancient belief system emphasizing mystical knowledge and the dualism of spirit and matter.
Conscientious Objector
An individual who refuses military service on moral or religious grounds.
Kabbalah
A mystical aspect of Jewish religion that explores the nature of God and the universe, often associated with modern celebrities.
