What is a clearance request?
When you want to enter a controlled airspace your call to Air Traffic Control will include a clearance request
Why does a clearance request need a position report?
To let ATC know where you are so they can assess how you can be integrated with traffic
What is the purpose of a position report for traffic information?
So other pilots can assess where you are and can avoid any collisions. ATC also uses your information to provide traffic information to other aircraft
What is the purpose of a position report for radar identification?
So that a radar controller can identify that the target on the radar is you
What is the purpose of a position report for search and rescue?
Regular reports allows ATS to monitor your progress and can narrow down the search area should you not make it to your destination

Because of the reasons for the report

Avoid reports such as “Overhead Auckland”, reports over small towns are generally good, use designated visual reporting points
What should you be aware of when using “abeam”?
It’s very vague, don’t use the term on its own
