Goals of the criminal justice system
Punishment, Deter Crime, Rehabilitation, Remove criminals from society
Misdemeanor
A relatively minor offense, punishable by fines, probation, or a brief jail or prison sentence unless extreme or repeated
Felony
A serious crime, punishable by a prison sentence of 1 or more years, with the most extreme penalty being the death penalty
Probation
A sentence where the offender is supervised instead of serving time in prison, often under a probation officer who is a social worker
Parole
Early release from prison to complete the sentence under supervision, often by a Parole officer who is a social worker
Law Enforcement
Responsible for questioning, apprehending persons, keeping peace, and responding to citizens' complaints
Court social workers
Work with victims of crime, conduct presentence investigations, and work in victims/witness programs
Community-service sentencing
Offenders work without pay in human service organizations, while restitution programs compensate victims for losses
Forensic Social Work
Specialized practice involving assessment and evaluation in civil and criminal justice
Correctional System
Uses imprisonment, probation, parole, and alternatives to change behavior of convicted persons
Prisons
Facilities for different security levels, with social workers advocating for prisoners and reducing violence
Community-Based Corrections
Alternatives to incarceration like probation and parole, often supervised by social workers
Juvenile Justice System
Established for rehabilitating children, with social workers playing a major role in children's court and programs
Value Dilemmas
Use and abuse of authority, issues of confidentiality, coercion, and enforcing specific behaviors from unwilling clients
Case
Alan Martin is the soical work in the criminal justice system. Brian Cook is his case who he treats not like a social worker. Another of alans cases, Ramon, was involved with drugs and whepons where used. He later died in the hospital. Alan rethought his position as a social worker and got a call form Brians schol that said he hadnt attended. He later descovered that the school had messed up.
Jail
a correctional facility used for short sentences or for detaining persons while they await a court hearing
Police social work:
within police departments, courthouses and jails. They work a lot with personal and family crisis situations. Cases besides DV may include traffic accidents and fatalities, child abuse, suicide, substance abuse, mental health emergencies and family disputes. They provide crisis intervention, brief individual or family counseling, referrals, victim assistance and sexual assault intervention, as well as community crime prevention efforts. In addition to home visits and crime scene crisis work, they are involved in crime prevention work in the community.
Intensive Probation
for persons who have committed violent crimes or who have displayed violence or hostility and are considered to be of high risk.
