Organ System
A group of anatomical structures that work together to perform a specific task or function.
Homeostasis
The relative constancy of the internal environment, tissue fluid, and blood.
Negative Feedback Mechanism
A regulatory mechanism that reverses a change to bring conditions back to normal.
Positive Feedback Mechanism
A mechanism that brings about rapid change in the same direction as the stimulus; does not achieve relative stability.
Ecosystem
A community plus the physical environment.
Biosphere
Regions of the Earth's crust, waters, and atmosphere inhabited by living things.
Community
Interacting populations in a particular area.
Population
Organisms of the same species in a particular area.
Organ
Composed of tissues functioning together for a specific task.
Tissue
A group of cells with a common structure and function.
Integumentary System
Protects the body, receives sensory input, helps control temperature, and synthesizes vitamin D.
Cardiovascular System
Transports blood, nutrients, gases, and wastes; defends against disease; helps control temperature, fluid, and pH balance.
Lymphatic System
Helps control fluid balance, absorbs fats, and defends against infectious disease.
Digestive System
Ingests food, digests food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste.
Respiratory System
Maintains breathing, exchanges gases at lungs and tissues, and helps control pH balance.
Urinary System
Excretes metabolic wastes, helps control fluid balance, and helps regulate pH balance.
Skeletal System
Supports the body, protects body parts, helps move the body, stores minerals, and produces blood cells.
Muscular System
Maintains posture, moves the body and internal organs, and produces heat.
Nervous System
Receives sensory input, integrates and stores input, and initiates motor output.
Endocrine System
Produces hormones that help coordinate organ systems and regulate metabolism.
Reproductive System
Produces gametes, transports gametes, and nurtures and gives birth to offspring in females.
