ADPIE
The five components of the nursing process: Assessment (Data Collection), Diagnosis (nursing), Planning (Goals), Implementation Interventions (action), and Evaluation (outcome).
Mental Status Exam
An assessment that evaluates appearance, behavior, awareness and orientation, thinking and content of thoughts, mood and affect, speech, memory, judgement, and perception.
Empathy
A guideline for nurse-patient interviewing that involves understanding the patient's feelings; noted as being preferred over sympathy.
NIC (Nursing Interventions Classifications)
A comprehensive standardized language that provides direct and indirect intervention labels with definitions and possible nursing actions.
NOC (Nursing Outcome Classifications)
Standardized language providing outcome statements and indicators using a 5 point measurement scale to facilitate tracking patient progress across care settings.
The Five Elements of Communication
The components required for communication: 1. Source, 2. Sender, 3. Channel, 4. Receiver, and 5. Destination.
The Three Basic Requirements of Communication
Communication specifically requires a sender, a message, and a receiver.
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP)
A therapeutic method of framing statements based on the idea that humans communicate in three basic ways: auditory (hearing), visual (sight), and tactile (touch).
Phenothiazines
The first classification of medications used to treat mental health issues, introduced in the 1950s.
Extrapyramidal symptoms
A common side effect specifically associated with the use of Antipsychotic (neuroleptic) medications.
Dependency
A common side effect identified for Antianxiety medications.
Lethargy
A common side effect listed for both Antidepressants and MAOIs.
Anticholinergics
A drug classification used as an antiparkinsons agent within mental health therapy.
Open-ended questions
The type of questioning recommended for both the Mental Status Exam and general nurse-patient interviewing to facilitate communication.
