Cells with common structure
These combine together to form tissue.
Structure, support, growth, transport, metabolism, reproduction, etc
Function of cells.
mitosis
Is a type of cell division in which one parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells - for growth, development, repair or replacement of damaged or old body cells.
meiosis
is a specialised type of cell division that produces four genetically unique sex cells. Is essential for sexual reproduction.
mitochondria
makes energy (atp) for the cell. Also known as the ‘power house of the cell’.
cytoplasm
jelly-like substance that holds and protects cell parts.
endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
carries and makes proteins and fats
ribosome
makes proteins
epithelial tissue
is a type of tissue that covers the surfaces of the body and lines organs, cavities and tubes. Protects the body and helps in absorption, secretion and sensation.
simple squamous cells
flat, thin cells that are found, for example, in the lungs and blood vessels. Their main functions are diffusion and filtration.
stratified squamous
many layers of flat cells that are found, for example, in the skin, mouth and throat. Their main function is protection against wear and tear.
connective tissue
is a type of body tissue that supports, connects, or binds other tissues and organs. Includes things like bone, cartilage, blood, fat, etc.
adipose tissue
Is fat tissue that stores energy and protects organs. Is a type of connective tissue.
dense connective tissue
is strong and forms tendons and ligaments. Is a type of connective tissue.
brain tissue
is made mostly of neurons and glial cells. Is a type of nervous tissue.
nervous tissue
is the type of tissue that receives and sends signals in the body. It helps you think, feel, move and respond to your surroundings.
muscular tissue
is a type of tissue that helps the body move by contracting and relaxing.
skeletal muscle
is a type of muscular tissue that moves bones, like biceps in your arms (voluntary).
smooth muscle
is a type of muscular tissue that is found in organs like the stomach and intestines (involuntary).
