Define acute injuries:
occur at a specific time. Sudden injury associated w traumatic event.
Fracture/ ligament tear
Define chronic injuries
occur over a period of time. Slowly developed injury associated with repetition or continuous stress
Tennis elbow
Define features
partial or complete break in the bone due to an excessive force that overcomes the bones potential to flex
Compound- fractured bones break through the skin creating an open wound
Simple- skin remains unbroken
Define dislocation
bone is displaced, moving it out of its original position
Subluxation- causes damage to the ligaments that connect bone to bone.
What is a contusion
area of skin or tissue where the blood vessels have ruptured.
Severe ones can lead to deep tissue damage
Define haematoma
damaged tissue leads to a haematoma- localised congealed bleeding from the ruptured blood vessels
Define sprain
damage to ligaments which connect bone to bone and support a joint
Forces the joint beyond RoM
Symptoms: swelling, bruising, possible dislocation
Strain
damage to muscle fibres or tendon connecting muscle to bone.
Partial or Complete rupture
Symptoms: swelling, discolouration, bruising
Abrasion
superficial damage to skin caused by scraping
Open wound may contain dirt or gravel requiring cleaning
Blisters
separation of the layers of skin where a pocket of fluid forms due to friction
Define concussion
disturbance of brain function - dizziness, headache, nausea.
Common in rugby and boxing
Define SALTAPS
S- stop the game
A- ask questions about the injury. Ask for consent
L- look for signs of swelling
T- touch the area gently
A- active movement. Ask if they can move the area without assistance
P- passive movement. Gently move injured area through RoM
S- strength testing. Ask if they can stand, lift or put pressure on the area
