Trauma
Exposure to actual or threatened harm, including physical or sexual abuse, neglect, or severe stressors.
Child Maltreatment
A generic term referring to four primary acts: physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and psychological abuse.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
A disorder characterized by persistent anxiety following an overwhelming traumatic event.
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)
A condition in which a child doesn't establish healthy attachments with parents or caregivers due to insufficient care.
Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED)
A disorder where a child shows overly familiar behavior with strangers, lacking typical restraint.
Acute Stress Disorder
A short-term condition that occurs after exposure to a traumatic event, characterized by symptoms of intrusion and avoidance.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A treatment method that helps patients understand the effects of their thoughts on feelings and behaviors.
Expectable Environment
An environment where children receive protective, nurturing adults, and opportunities for socialization.
Allostatic Load
The cumulative burden of chronic stress and life events which can compromise physiological and psychological health.
Cycle-of-Violence Hypothesis
The theory that those who are abused as children are more likely to perpetrate violence as adults.
Emotion Regulation
The ability to modulate emotional responses, crucial for effective coping with stress and trauma.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
An evidence-based treatment designed to help children and adolescents cope with the emotional effects of trauma and maltreatment.
Psychological Abuse
