Tools/Utilities

Programs that enable you to perform maintenance-type tasks related to managing devices, media, and programs.

Software System

The operating system and other tools that control or maintain the operations of a computer and its devices.

Native App

An app written for a specific platform and installed on a computer or mobile device.

Cloud App

An app that makes use of software and data that are not stored on your computer or mobile device.

Web App

A special type of cloud app that is accessed by visiting a website in a browser.

Freeware

SaaS (Software as a Service)

A model for distributing software in which a software provider hosts applications on a server and makes them available to users via the Internet.

Software Registration

The optional process of submitting personal information to the software manufacturer or developer.

Product Activation

A technique used by software manufacturers to ensure that the software is not installed on more computers than legally licensed.

License Agreement

The right to use a program or app, which includes specific software conditions that the user must accept.

Word Processing Software/Word Processor

An application that allows users to create and manipulate documents containing text and sometimes graphics.

An application that allows users to organize data in columns and rows and perform calculations on the data.

Database

A collection of data organized in a manner that allows access, retrieval, and use of that data.

A request for specific data from the database.

Databases vs Spreadsheets

Databases are used for collecting, reorganizing, filtering, and generating reports from data, while spreadsheets are used for calculations and charts.

Note Taking Software

An application that enables users to enter typed text, handwritten comments, drawings, sketches, photos, and links anywhere on a page and then save the page as part of a notebook.

Text Editor

Used to type information when it does not need to be formatted with fonts, page numbers, or other styles.

Calendar and Contact Management Program

An application that helps you organize your calendar, keep track of contacts, and share this information with other devices or users.

A collection of individual applications available together as a unit.

Software that identifies and removes computer viruses from memory, storage media, or incoming files.

Quarantine

A separate area of a hard drive that holds infected files until the infection can be removed.

Spyware

A program that secretly collects information about a user and communicates it to an outside source while the user is online.

Adware

A program that displays online advertisements on webpages, email messages, or other Internet services.

Malware Remover

A program that detects and deletes spyware, adware, and other malware.

Cookie

A small text file placed on a computer or mobile device by a web server, storing information like shopping cart items, usernames, and addresses.

Internet Filters

Programs that remove or block certain items from being displayed, such as anti-spam programs, web filters, phishing filters, and pop-up blockers.

Spam

Unsolicited email messages or postings sent to many recipients or forums at once.

A central location in Windows where users can access various system settings and tools.

A location on a Mac where deleted files are temporarily stored before being permanently removed.
