Fetal Pig Respiratory Structures:

Hard palate

Soft palate

Glottis

Epiglottis

Pharynx

Larynx

Cricoid Cartilage

Trachea

Carina

Bronchi

Esophagus

Diaphragm

Lungs

Hard palate- Anterior (roof of mouth); ribbed (palatine rugae)

Soft palate- Smooth (behind hard palate)

Glottis- opening between the vocal cords

Epiglottis- moveable “lid” above the larynx preventing food from entering the windpipe (flap that covers the larynx and trachea while swallowing)

Pharynx- Both food & air pass through the pharynx

Larynx-voice box

Cricoid Cartilage- 1st full ring of cartilage below the larynx

Trachea- windpipe (cartilage rings maintain airways)

Carina- point of 1st split

Bronchi- Primary, secondary, tertiary

Esophagus- behind trachea; part of the digestive tract

Diaphragm- muscle tissue aids in breathing

Lungs- R=3 lobs and L=2lobes

Human Respiratory Model Respiratory Structures

Corniculate Cartilage

Cuneiform Cartilage

Arytenoid Cartilage

Cricoid Cartilage

Thyroid Cartilage

Epiglottis

True Vocal Folds

False Vocal Folds

Hyoid Bone

Thyroid Gland

Trachea

Primary Bronchi

Secondary/Lobar Bronchi

Tertiary Segmental Bronchi

Alveoli

Nose

Nasopharynx

Corniculate Cartilage- support larynx

Cuneiform Cartilage- support larynx

Arytenoid Cartilage- support larynx

Cricoid Cartilage- 1st full ring on trachea

Thyroid Cartilage- “adam’s apple”; largest cartilage of larynx

Epiglottis- closes for food, opens for air; flap that covers the windpipe while swallowing

True Vocal Folds- generate sound

False Vocal Folds- vestibular fold, protect vocal cords from swallowing/coughing

Hyoid Bone- muscle anchor supports tongue and larynx (top of larynx- hyoid articulates with no other bone)

Thyroid Gland- lies over larynx- calcium homeostasis

Trachea- windpipe

Primary Bronchi- major branches off trachea

Secondary/Lobar Bronchi- supply each lung lobe

Tertiary Segmental Bronchi- supply lung segments

Alveoli- involved in gas exchange (CO2/O2)

Nose- primary function = air passageway (filter air & warm and humidify/moisten air) & houses olfactory (smell) receptors

Nasopharynx- Air only

Respiratory Structures to ID:

Epiglottis Cartilage

Superior Lobe of the R/L Lung

Medial Lobe of R Lung

Inferior Lobe of the R/L Lung

Which lung is smaller L or R?

Epiglottis Cartilage- gives the epiglottis its shape and ability to bend

Superior Lobe of the R/L Lung- top lobe

Medial Lobe of R Lung- middle lobe

Inferior Lobe of the R/L Lung- bottom lobe

The left lung is smaller because it has a cardiac notch on the medial portion of the lung- accommodates the heart.
