Premillennialism
A secret rapture will occur that separates the church and Israel, followed by a seven-year tribulation. Christ will then return to reign on Earth for 1000 years, with Israel being at the center.
Amillennialism
The thousand years are interpreted as the modern church age. It states that Christ currently reigns from Heaven and Satan is bound before the second coming.
Post-Millennialism
A more optimistic view that says the world will experience a period of peace and righteousness
Historical (Revelation reading)
reference to the time and place in which it was written (disclose truth about world events at the time) (666 = Nero)
Idealist (Revelation reading)
reference to universal themes and symbols, main purpose to provide spiritual insight that's meaningful for every time and place (666 can apply to anyone who aligns themself against Christ)
Futurist (Revelation reading)
reference to times and places after its composition, main purpose to predict what would come to pass in generations yet to come (666 = Ronald Wilson Reagan)
Apocalyptic Literature
a genre of heavily symbolic literature that displays distinctive literary characteristics and claims to unveil the truth about the world as viewed from a dualistic and deterministic perspective (Revelation and 1 Thessalonians)
Antichrist
anyone who denies that Jesus is Christ, denies the Father and the Son or opposes Christ by acting as a false Messiah (1,2,3 John, Revelation).
Dispersion
scattering of the Jewish people beyond Israel (Babylon)
Wisdom Literature
A genre of Old Testament literature such as psalms and proverbs, focuses on common-sense observations about life (James)
Supersessionism
a view where the Church replaced Israel as God's covenant people (1 Peter)
Realized eschatology
The belief that the blessings of eternal life are a reality that is available in the present, not merely something that we hope for in the future (Colossians).
Glossolalia
The gift of speaking in tongues. (1 Corinthians)
Apocalyptic expectation
The belief that Jesus' return is coming imminently
Sacraments
Ordinary process with spiritual significance. (Baptism or Lord's Supper)
Pastoral Epistles
the letters addressed to individuals charged with oversight of congregations
Super Apostles
False teachers who appeared to be superior to Paul in their manner and authority (2 Corinthians).
"Jars of Clay"
Hiding treasure in fragile jars of clay to show that the power belongs to God and not us (2 Corinthians)
Cessationism
Spiritual (Miraculous) gifts are not available anymore. There was a period at which they ceased to occur. (300 years of these gifts and then they ceased) (Prophecy, healing, tongue speaking)
Non-cessationism
Spiritual gifts are still available today
Patriarchalism
a view that God gave men authority over women because of the order of creation and woman proved herself untrustworthy in the garden
Complementarianism
God created men and women as equal partners in creation but they have different roles: men in leadership roles, women in domestic roles. (Gender= 1 Corinthians, 1 Timothy)
Egalitarianism
Men and women are equal, specifically in their roles. God gifts people in different ways and they should act on those gifts and calling. (Women in leadership roles in the church.)
Orthodoxy
The opposite of Heresy; right thinking and correct doctrine
Heresy
A false teaching or a teaching that does not conform to the official standards of a religious community (Colossians, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, Jude)
Low Christology
emphasizes Jesus' humanity and earthly ministry (Mark)
High Christology
focuses on Jesus' divinity and preexistence (John)
Gnosticism
A heresy that states that the material world is evil and we are made perfect through the spirit. Promising secret, divine knowledge. (Thomas (not in the New Testament))
Doctrine of Election
God chooses Israel to bring light to the rest of the world. Also that God elects some people to be saved - your salvation is a reflection of God's desire for you to be saved (Romans and Ephesians).
Doctrine of Justification
The reason Sinners can enter into right relationship with a Holy God (Galatians and Romans)
Doctrine of Sanctification
The process by which one is made holy and more like Jesus. (Galatians and Romans)
Atonement
removing or payment for sins (the way God reconciled Himself with Humankind) (Jesus on the cross was atonement for sins)
Eschatology
study of the end times
Christology
study of Christ- who He is, what He's done, and what that means for us
Parousia
the second coming of Christ (1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, Revelation)
Creeds
confessional statements summarizing key articles of faith
Exegesis
scholarly study of the Bible with an emphasis on the actual explication of texts. What the text meant in the time period it was written in. (1 Corinthians, "What was happening in the Corinthian church that made Paul talk about tongue speaking?")
Hermeneutics
philosophical reflection on the process of interpretation, including consideration of questions regarding what the goal of interpretation should be. Reading with an eye of what it means for us. ("What does this mean for us now?")
Ascension
when Jesus left the Earth and go to Heaven
Incarnational Theology
Jesus is fully God and fully human (two natures, divine + human)
Arianism
A heresy denying that Jesus is truly God (Jesus is a Prophet)
Docetism
Heresy that denies that Christ, who is God, took on a true human nature.
Monotheism
the belief that there is only one God
Old Perspective of Paul
Arguing against the idea that we have to "do things" to be saved. Works and Righteousness. (Galatians and Romans)
New Perspective of Paul
For gentiles to be a part of their community they do not have to become Jewish. (Galatians and Romans)
