Statistical Question
A question that anticipates there will be many different answers.
Mean
The sum of the data divided by the number of data values (the average).
Median
The middle number in a set of data when the numbers are in order from least to greatest.
Mode
The number or numbers that occur most often in a data set.
Range
The difference between the greatest and least values in a data set.
Outlier
A data value that is much greater or much less than the other values in a set.
Dot Plot
A visual display of data where each value is represented by a dot above a number line.
Histogram
A type of bar graph used to display numerical data that has been organized into equal intervals.
Box Plot
A diagram that uses a number line to show the distribution of a set of data using the median, quartiles, and extreme values.
Interquartile Range (IQR)
The distance between the first and third quartiles of the data set.
Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD)
The average distance between each data value and the mean.
Quartiles
Values that divide a data set into four equal parts.
Measures of Center
Numbers that describe the 'center' of a data set (Mean, Median, Mode).
Measures of Variation
Numbers used to describe the distribution or spread of data (Range, IQR, MAD).
