What reagent do you use to test for alkenes?
Bromine water.
Describe and explain the positive result for testing for alkenes with bromine water.
Positive result: bromine water decolourises (from orange-brown to colourless).
This is because the double bond in the alkene breaks and a dibromoalkane is formed, which is colourless.
What reagent do you use to determine whether an alcohol is tertiary or not?
Add acidified potassium dichromate. Tertiary alcohols are not readily oxidised so the mixture will remain orange.
Give and explain a possible test for carboxylic acids.
Add ethanol with a few drops of sulfuric acid.
If a carboxylic acid is present an ester will be produced, so the positive result is a sweet smell.
