Clause
A group of words containing a subject and predicate and used as part of a sentence.
Main Clause
A clause that expresses a completed thought and can stand alone as a sentence.
Subordinate Clause
A clause introduced by a subordinator that does not express a completed thought and cannot stand alone; it must be attached to a main clause.
Subordinator
A word that, when placed in front of a clause, makes the clause subordinate (e.g., although, because, since, while).
Relative Clause
A kind of clause introduced by a relative pronoun, such as in the sentence 'Jake, who had a college degree, could not get a job.'
Noun Clause
A subordinate clause used as a noun.
Adverb Clause
A subordinate clause that is used as an adverb.
Adjective Clause
A clause used as an adjective.
Simple Sentence
A sentence type containing one main clause and no subordinate clauses.
Compound Sentence
A sentence composed of two or more main clauses, but no subordinate clauses.
Complex Sentence
A sentence containing one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
Compound-complex Sentence
A sentence containing two or more main clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.

Relative Clause
