Rally Scoring
A system in badminton where a point is awarded to whoever wins the rally, regardless of who served.
Smash
An attacking badminton shot hit with high velocity and a steep downward trajectory.
Clear
A defensive or tactical badminton shot hit high and deep to the back of the opponent's court to move them away from the net.
Drop Shot
A soft badminton shot that falls just over the net.
Badminton Doubles Court
A court that is wider than the singles court and utilizes the full outer boundaries during active play.
Legal Serve (Badminton)
A serve struck below the waist with an underhand motion that travels diagonally into the opponent’s service box.
Traversing
Moving horizontally on a climbing wall while keeping hips close to the wall and using toes rather than heels.
Carabiner
The metal loop with a spring gate that secures the rope to the climbing harness.
Double-backed
The status of a climbing harness once it has been properly tightened during a safety check.
Belayer
The person whose main job is to keep the rope taut and never allow excess slack to build up for the climber's safety.
Standard Lay-up
A basketball shot worth 2 points.
Free Throws
Basketball shots worth 1 point each, taken from the Free Throw Line (Foul Line) after a shooting foul.
Dribbling
A ball handling technique in basketball where the ball is kept below waist level for maximum control.
Double Dribble
A violation where a player stops their dribble and starts again, or dribbles with two hands simultaneously.
Pivoting
A basketball move allowing a player to rotate on one planted foot to protect the ball or find a passing lane.
Hits per Side (Pickleball)
A regulation stating you only get one hit to get the ball over the net; passing to a partner is not allowed.
The Kitchen
The 7-foot non-volley zone near the net in Pickleball where players cannot hit the ball out of the air while standing inside it.
Double Bounce Rule
A Pickleball rule where the ball must bounce once on the return of the serve and once on the first return before teams are allowed to volley.
Cardiovascular Endurance
The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen during sustained physical activity, improved by staying in the Target Heart Rate Zone.
Muscular Endurance
The ability of a muscle to perform repeated contractions over time, measured by the Push-Up or Curl-Up tests.
Muscular Strength
The maximum force a muscle can exert in a single effort.
Flexibility
The range of motion in joints, measured by the Sit and Reach test.
