Geography
The study of the world, its landforms and bodies of water, climate, and how humans interact with the environment.
Absolute Location
The exact location of a place using latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
The location of a place based on its relationship to other places.
Place (Physical Characteristics)
Characteristics including landforms, climate, plants, and animals.
Place (Human Characteristics)
Characteristics including culture, language, housing, and lifestyle.
Human-Environment Interaction
How humans affect the environment and vice versa, such as through planting, deforestation, or pollution.
Movement
The movement of people, ideas, products, and information, including migration, travel, and trade.
Region
A part of the world with similar characteristics, such as a hot region or an agricultural region.
Legend
The part of a map that explains the symbols used.
Compass Rose
A map feature showing directions: North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W).
Scale
A map feature used to measure distance.
Grid
Lines on a map used to determine coordinates.
Climate
The long-term condition of the weather in a specific area.
Weather
The current condition of the atmosphere.
Asia
Located in the Eastern Hemisphere between approximately 10∘S−80∘N and 25∘E−170∘W; contains about 49 countries and famous spots like Mount Everest and the Great Wall of China.
Africa
Located between 35∘S−37∘N and 17∘W−51∘E; contains 54 countries and famous spots like the Sahara Desert and the Nile River.
North America
Located between 7∘N−83∘N and 20∘W−170∘W; contains 23 countries and famous spots like the Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountains.
South America
Located between 12∘N−55∘S and 35∘W−81∘W; contains 12 countries and famous spots like the Amazon River and Andes Mountains.
Europe
Located between 35∘N−70∘N and 10∘W−60∘E; contains 44 countries and famous spots like the Alps and the Eiffel Tower.
Australia / Oceania
Located between 10∘S−45∘S and 110∘E−180∘E; contains about 14 countries and the Great Barrier Reef.
Antarctica
Located between 60∘S−90∘S; has the coldest polar climate, no permanent countries, and features ice sheets and penguins.
Mountain
An elevated landform, such as Mt. Everest.
Volcano
A landform from which lava is expelled.
Plain
A flat area of land.
Plateau
A landform that is high and flat.
Valley
The land area located between mountains.
Hill
An elevated landform that is lower than a mountain.
Island
A piece of land entirely surrounded by water.
Peninsula
A piece of land projecting out into the water.
Ocean
The widest and largest body of water.
Sea
A body of water that is smaller than an ocean.
River
A body of flowing water.
Lake
An inland body of water surrounded by land.
Gulf
A part of the sea that is partially surrounded by land.
Bay
A small gulf.
Strait
A narrow passage of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
Waterfall
Water falling from a height.
Latitude
Horizontal lines on a map or globe that run North and South of the Equator.
Longitude
Vertical lines on a map or globe that run East and West of the Prime Meridian.
Equator
The 0∘ latitude line that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Prime Meridian
The 0∘ longitude line that divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
