Principles of Design

The laws of design that should be reflected in every piece of art you create. They are: Contrast, Emphasis, Balance, Unity, Pattern, Movement, and Rhythm

Elements of Art

These are the components that you use when making a design or piece of artwork. They are: Line, Color, Texture, Shape/Form, Value, and SIze.

Greenware

BIsqueware

Clay that has been fired the first time

Bisque

the first firing of clay without glazes

Slab

clay evenly rolled and formed by drapping or joining

Coil

clay is rolled into “snake” like pieces in this type of construction

Sgraffito

A decorative pottery technique where you apply a different color of slip (or glaze) than the clay body and scratch away design to reveal the clay body beneath

Batt

A plaster base to keep clay moist

Rails

Pieces of wood used to keep thickness consistent when rolling

Glaze

Coating for bisqueware that is made from pigment and glass (silica)

Kiln

The machine that heats clay and melts glaze

Slip

Clay diluted with water to the consistency of cream; used for joining or for decoration

Scoring

Making marks on the edges of 2 pieces before joining with slip

Bone Dry

Unfired clay that is free of water and ready to fire

Leather hard

clay that has begun to dry out and harden. This is the ideal time to crave detail
