Work
The use of force โ a push or a pull โ to move an object; it is only done when a force moves an object.
Simple Machines
Devices that help make doing work easier, have few or no moving parts, and require only one force to use.
Lever
A bar that pivots, or turns, on a fixed point.
Fulcrum
The fixed point on a lever that does not move.
Parts of a lever
The three components belonging to a lever: load, fulcrum, and force.
Wheel-and-Axle
A machine made up of a wheel that turns around a stiff bar, or axle, which are connected so that they turn together.
Pulley
A wheel with a rope, cord, or chain around it used to change the size or direction of a force.
Inclined Plane
A flat surface that is slanted so that one end is higher than the other; it lets you lift a load using a smaller force over a greater distance.
Wedge
Two inclined planes that are put back to back, where one edge is sharp and pointed and the other is wide and flat.
Screw
An inclined plane (thread) wrapped around a shaft or a cylinder used to hold objects together or move things up.
Compound Machine
A machine made up of a combination of two or more simple machines, such as scissors, bicycles, or a wheel barrow.
