What is ODD?
a childhood disorder that involves a pattern of angry/ irritable mood,
argumentative/ defiant behavior, or vindictiveness
what are the 3 types of ODD?
Mild: symptoms only in one setting
Moderate: symptoms in two settings
Severe: symptoms in three or more settings
What is ODD comorbid with?
often comorbid with ADHD and conduct disorder
often comes before the development of childhood-onset conduct disorder
What are the risk factors of ODD?
risk factors: poor emotion regulation, reciprocal
relationship with harsh and inconsistent parenting,
genetics don’t distinguish between ODD/CD
more likely to be bullied and to be a bully
why is it controversial to diagnosis ODD?
lost of overlap to both adhd and autism AND many symptoms are a reasonable reactions to poor parenting/difficult home life
what are the pros and cons to diagnosing ODD?
Pros: make services more accessible & validate parents
Cons: No clear treatment, labels child as bad, fails to consider environment, does not explain behaviors
How do you treat ODD?
Parenting support & validation for positive behaviours
addressing co-morbid issues
what is circle of security?
When parents provide a secure base for children and Coping with shark music which is internal and Fearful reactions to children's behavior
What is conduct disorder?
A childhood disorder that is a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which rights of and societal norms and laws are often violated. IF ADULT MUST NOT MEET THE CRIT FOR ASPD
What are the symptoms of conduct disorder?
Aggression and cruelness to people and animals
Bullies threatens and intimidates other people
destruction of property
deceitfulness and theft
serious rule violation
What are the risk factors for CD?
difficult infant
below-average IQ - especially poor verbal skills
neglect, harsh discipline, abuse
genetics: more common when parents have severe
alcohol use, mood disorders, schizophrennia, ADHD,
or conduct disorder
What can CD look like in boys?
fighting, stealing, vandalism, school discipline more physical aggression
What can CD look like in Girls?
Lying, truancy, running away, prostitution, less physical aggression
