Totalitarianism:
government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state
Police state:
totalitarian state controlled by a political police force that secretly supervises the citizens' activities.
Single Party State:
one political party holds the exclusive right to govern, effectively outlawing or suppressing all opposition parties
Aryanism:
ideology of racial supremacy which views the supposed Aryan race as a distinct and superior racial group entitled to rule the rest of humanity
Volksgemeinschaft:
“people’s community”, a racially unified and hierarchically organized body in which the interests of individuals would be strictly subordinate to those of the nation
Lebensraum:
“living space” that a state believes is needed for natural development, concept of superiority driving German expansion
Communism:
spread of beliefs worldwide, no social classes, no private property, distribution of goods and services
Collectivization:
policy of transferring the ownership of private farmland to the state
Cult of Personality:
creation of an idealized and heroic image of a leader by a government (through unquestioning flattery and praise)
Kulaks:
wealthier peasant class that emerged in USSR who had capitalist tendencies
Great Purge:
USSR period of mass political repression via widespread purges in all sectors of society (gov, industry, military, cultural)
Gestapo:
non-uniformed police using ruthless and cruel methods on opponents of regime
NKVD:
secret police that terrorized population with threats and accusations
