An idiom used to indicate that an opportunity has already passed or a situation is no longer possible to change.

To have a gradual, harmful, or negative effect on someone or something, often resulting in damage or health issues.
play it by ear (situational)
To deal with a situation as it develops and make decisions based on the circumstances rather than following a fixed plan.

To be able to play a piece of music by memory or by listening to the sound, without needing to read sheet music.
