Ulipristal 30mg - Selective progesterone receptor modulator
What is the most effective emergency contraception? How is it used?
copper iud
inserted by GP and reproductive health clinics up to 5 dats after the sex and up to 5 days after expected date of ovulation
How is levonorgestrel used? Requirements?
Unprotected sex has to have occurred within 72 hours, for age 16+
Must rule out the possibility of pregnancy
Any bowel/liver diseases?
Concurrent medicines?
Hypersensitivity?
History of ectopic pregnancy?
What is the counseling for levonorgestrel?
Take ASAP so offer water in pharmacy
Side effects are: nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea
If patient vomits within 3 hours 2nd dose is needed
How is ulipristal used? Requirements?
Unprotected sex writhing 120 hours (5 days)
For women of reproductive age
Must rule our possibility of pregnancy
Bowel/Liver diseases?
Severe asthma?
Concurrent medicines?
Hypersensitivity?
Counseling for ulipristal?
Take ASAP
Side effects: Nausea, vomit, dizziness, headache, fatigue, diarrhea, painful periods, muscle pain
if vomit within 3 hours 2nd dose needed

What needs to be done after emergency hormonal contraceptives are provided?
establish and support patient with any contraceptive needs
Give pregnancy advice
Support with STI issues
Look out for safeguarding issues
Aftercare for EHC?
Pregnancy test needed dis menstruation delayed by >7 days, is lighter than usual or associated with abdominal pain that isn’t typical
CANNOT give advanced supply, so long lasting reversible contraceptive should be considered instead
